Here's a video I found showing how peeled veneers are made before fabricating them onto engineered hardwoods. Most 3/8ths engineered planks use these types of veneers.
Why Engineered Wood Veneers Peel
Engineered hardwood is a real wood veneer bonded to a plywood or composite core, and how that veneer was cut affects how well it holds up over time. Rotary-cut veneer is peeled off a spinning log in one continuous sheet, which is efficient to produce but can result in a less stable bond and a grain pattern that looks less like solid wood. Plain-sawn veneer, cut in flat sheets like solid lumber, generally bonds more securely and grain-matches real hardwood more closely.
Peeling most often shows up at seams, high-moisture areas, or spots where the adhesive bond has broken down with age — and once a veneer has separated from its core, that section cannot be sanded flat like solid wood; the wear layer is too thin and sanding through it exposes the core underneath.
If your engineered floor has peeling veneer in more than a small area, replacement of that section (or the whole floor, depending on extent) is usually more practical than repair. We assess veneer thickness and condition on-site before recommending a fix so you are not paying for a repair that will not hold.

A damaged board on a solid hardwood floor can almost always be replaced without it showing — that is what hardwood lacing is, weaving new boards milled to match your existing floor's species, width, and stain into the damaged area and finishing it to blend in. Engineered floors with a peeled or worn-through veneer do not have that same option once the wear layer is gone, since there is no more wood to sand or lace into.
Moisture is the most common root cause of both veneer failure and adhesive breakdown, so if peeling is showing up near a specific wall, appliance, or entry point, it is worth checking for a moisture source before replacing the affected section — otherwise the new material fails the same way. We assess that during every on-site visit rather than assuming the veneer itself is simply defective.

When It's Time to Consider Solid Hardwood
One real advantage solid hardwood has over engineered flooring is that it can be refinished multiple times over the life of a house, since there is no thin veneer to sand through — a full sand-and-refinish takes it back to bare wood and starts fresh, something an engineered floor with a peeling or worn-through veneer simply cannot do. If you are replacing an engineered floor that has failed, that is worth weighing against going solid the next time around.
