How to Pick a Finish
A few questions help narrow it down fast. How much foot traffic does the room actually get — a mudroom and a formal dining room have very different needs. Do you want a natural, low-sheen look or a glossier, more traditional finish? Are low-VOC products a priority for your household? And how do you feel about maintenance — are you comfortable with periodic recoats, or do you want a finish that's easy to spot-repair yourself between full services?
We'll walk through all of this at your free on-site estimate, bring physical samples so you're not guessing from a screen, and give you a straight recommendation — not just whatever happens to be easiest for us to install.

Which finish is the most durable?
Bona's polyurethane systems (Traffic HD, Domo) are built for heavy traffic and are among the toughest film finishes we install. Hardwax oils like Rubio Monocoat and Pallmann Magic Oil trade a little scratch resistance for a more natural look and easier spot repair.
What's the difference between a polyurethane finish and a hardwax oil?
Polyurethane sits on top of the wood as a film, so the whole floor typically needs to be recoated or sanded when it wears. Hardwax oils like Rubio Monocoat and Pallmann Magic Oil penetrate into the wood, so scratches and worn patches can often be spot-repaired without redoing the entire floor.

Yes. We'll bring samples to your on-site estimate and talk through options for your species of wood and the light in your room — you can also browse our stain color chart beforehand to get a head start.
Are hardwax oil finishes low-VOC?
Yes, that's one of the main reasons homeowners choose them. Rubio Monocoat, Bona Craft Oil, and Pallmann Magic Oil are all low-VOC options compared to traditional oil-based polyurethane.
Can I switch finishes when I refinish an existing floor?
In most cases, yes. Switching from oil-based polyurethane to a hardwax oil (or the reverse) is a normal part of a full refinish — we'll tell you what's realistic for your specific floor during the on-site visit.
