Hollow Spots: Normal Click-Lock or a Real Problem?
LVP (luxury vinyl plank) floats over the subfloor using a click-lock system rather than gluing down every board, so a very slight hollow sound underfoot in some spots can be normal. A more pronounced hollow or spongy feel, especially in one concentrated area, usually points to an uneven subfloor, a gap in the underlayment, or planks that never fully locked together during installation.
Wear layer thickness also plays a role in how a floor feels and holds up — a thin wear layer over a lower-quality core flexes more underfoot and is more prone to denting and separating at the seams over time than a thicker, better-built plank.
If hollow spots show up in a large area or get worse over time, it is worth having someone assess the subfloor before more flooring goes down on top of it. When to Call a Professional
A single hollow-sounding plank near a wall or transition is usually harmless and simply reflects normal expansion gaps built into a floating floor. Multiple hollow spots spreading across a room, or a section that feels like it is sinking underfoot, is a different story and usually means the subfloor itself needs leveling or repair before the LVP can be relaid properly.
