Where the rectangular rosettes square off, this one goes soft — a full oval field raised inside a beveled oval frame, milled from red oak that comes in noticeably lighter and blonder than the rectangular pieces, with loose cathedral streaks running through the grain instead of tight straight lines. That curved shape reads less formal against a turned or Colonial baluster set than a hard-cornered rosette would. It does the same job as any rosette — closing the wall end of a handrail into a finished cap instead of a raw board edge — but the oval silhouette softens the transition where the rail meets the wall.
