Managing Moisture Around Your Hardwood Floors
Solid hardwood moves with the seasons, expanding when humidity rises and contracting when the air dries out. Keeping indoor humidity between 45–65% and temperature between 65–75°F is the single best thing a homeowner can do to prevent gaps opening up in winter or boards cupping in summer.
Basements and crawlspaces are the usual source of moisture problems, so keeping that space properly ventilated and within a similar humidity range protects the floor from underneath, where you cannot see it happening until boards start to visibly cup or crown.
If you already have cupping, discoloration, or boards that feel soft underfoot, do not sand it flat right away — sanding a cupped floor before the moisture source is fixed can leave you with a crowned floor once it dries back out. We always assess the moisture level on-site with a meter before recommending a repair or a full refinish.

When Moisture Damage Needs a Repair, Not a Refinish
A floor with water damage does not usually need to be replaced in full. Minor water staining can sometimes be drawn out during a refinish, and more significant damage typically means removing and replacing only the affected boards — hardwood lacing weaves new boards, milled to match your existing floor's species, width, and stain, into the damaged area so the repair blends in rather than standing out as a patch.
Only warping or buckling that has spread across a large area typically calls for anything close to a full replacement, and if your floor has already warped, addressing it quickly matters — the longer moisture sits underneath, the harder the repair becomes.
