Why We Water-Pop Before Staining
Water popping (also called grain popping) means wiping the bare, sanded wood with a light coat of water before staining. The water raises the wood grain and opens the pores evenly across the whole floor, so the stain that goes on afterward absorbs uniformly instead of blotching in some spots and skipping others.
It matters most on darker stains and on species like red oak and pine, where uneven absorption is the most visible. Skipping this step is one of the most common reasons a DIY stain job comes out patchy, and it is why we always test the process on a sample board that matches your floor's grade before committing to a whole room.

How Staining Fits Into the Overall Project
Staining is a genuine cost driver, not a minor upcharge, because it adds a full extra step to the process: water popping, the stain application itself, and its own dry time before finish coats can go on. A clear or natural finish skips all of that, which is part of why so many homeowners choosing white oak today go with a natural look instead of a stain.
Once the stain has cured, the finish coat you choose changes the outcome again — an oil-based polyurethane will amber and deepen the stain's tone over the years, while a water-based finish stays true to the color you picked on day one. We confirm the whole combination, water-popped or not, on a physical sample before we ever touch your actual floor.
