A Simple Cleaning Schedule That Actually Works
Daily, a quick pass with a soft-bristle vacuum attachment or a microfiber dust mop keeps grit from acting like sandpaper under foot traffic — that grit is the single biggest cause of dulled finish we see on older floors. Weekly, a proper damp-mop with a hardwood-safe cleaner (never soap-based cleaners, wax, or steam) picks up what dry dusting leaves behind.
Avoid vinegar-and-water mixes, oil soaps, and any cleaner containing wax, silicone, or citrus/tung oil — all of them dull a modern polyurethane or hardwax finish over time instead of protecting it. A microfiber pad on a flat mop, used barely damp, is the safest everyday tool.
Keep indoor humidity between 45–65% and temperature between 65–75°F to prevent boards from cupping or gapping with the seasons, and use felt pads under furniture plus a real entry mat to trap grit before it ever reaches the floor. If your finish has worn thin despite good habits, a screen-and-recoat is usually a same-day fix rather than a full sand.

Answers to Common Cleaning Questions
How soon can rugs go back down after a refinish? Plan on waiting the full cure time for your finish — up to 14 days for waterborne finishes and up to 45 days for oil-modified polyurethane. Putting rugs down early can cause discoloration that shows up even after the rug is removed, and it is one of the most common move-back-in mistakes we see.
Why not just use vinegar and water? We do not recommend it. Vinegar and water dull a finish's shine over time, soap-based cleaners and wax leave residue behind, and steam cleaners introduce heat and excess water that can cause cupping and long-term damage. A hardwood-specific cleaner like Bona or Pallmann is the safer everyday choice.
How often should a floor be buffed and recoated? Every 5 to 10 years is a reasonable window for most homes, depending on foot traffic. A buff-and-coat is a same-day service in most rooms and refreshes the finish without the cost or downtime of a full sand-and-refinish — the water-drop test (a few drops on a worn spot, wait ten minutes) is a quick way to tell if you are due.
